i wandered over here from the koreanish (alex chee) blog. as a former memphian myself, i really dug your isaac hayes tribute. i don't think that people realize what a profound influence hayes (and stax) had on american music. he was a giant, and i was happy to see that memphis, after years of neglecting its own, has finally become aware of its significant cultural heritage...

will return here.

Leigh, I knew I could count on the 901 to recognize Isaac Hayes' songwriting and big-time cultural contribution.

Liked your article a lot, Jimi. It made a nice compliment to Mark Anthony Neal's very history oriented write-up. Plus, it takes some confidence to play the theme from Shaft at your wedding, walking down the aisle...I respect that!

I have such mixed feelings about the iconic stuff. On the one hand, the remembrances at The Root.com are connected and it is deep (I'm thinking also about the comments section). I mean, the guy was such a pop culture presence...not just a behind-the-scenes songwriter. My personality loves the behind-the-scenes stuff, so it is what I love most about Hayes. The studio rat who could make something like Black Moses. On the other hand, the iconic stuff resonates pretty strange at Cnn.com and related places, no? Like, when South Park becomes a major part of his career in the obituary...not a fan of that.

I think I tried to talk about his artistry in my take, but I focused it on an iconic work, so I guess it's a wash, huh? :)

Thanks for the nod.

If it's any consolation, John, the news coverage here in Memphis has been closer to your kind of remembrance than the rest of the South-Park-y nonsense.
