Don't get me wrong -- in other circumstances I have castigated the HRC for their conciliatory approach that excludes anyone that doesn't fit their upper-middle-class vanilla version of gay/lesbian (I choose these terms specifically in this case) family values. On the other hand, I worry about being too inclusive for fear of offending the "people in Peoria."

I guess my beliefs conflict with my sense of political efficacy which, in its own way, makes me as much of a hypocrite as Craig.

I currently live in NYC so everyone pretty much ignores it when my boy and I walk down the street but I do worry about what will happen when/if we move.

Mike,
I hear what you're saying, though I'd argue it's part of queer political obligation to widen the circle of acceptance as much as we can. And I prefer an affirmative agenda rather than simply an avoid-the-conservative-wrath approach.

I also think that queer desire is controlled any time it is expressed, even 'normatively.' I'm thinking here of the social policing that comes when I walk down the street holding someone's hand. Pretty intense. And in terms of actual criminality, sodomy laws are still on the books in plenty of places.

Emily--

I personally have no problem with consensual public/non-monogamous/non-relational sex, however, I think a lot of "us queers" lead totally normative lives that never venture into public parks, stalls, or gym showers. I hate the conflation of homosexual desire with other forms of non-normative sexuality -- While the desire for inclusivity comes from a noble place on the left, it easily supports the conservative agenda by allowing the easy comparison of gays to pedophiles, zoophiles, etc.

John--

I agree that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, but Craig's level of hypocrisy is astounding. He voted for DOMA and against including gays under hate crime legislation. Regardless of how he identifies, he has acted against the interest of those with similar sexual (alleged) behaviors to himself. Also, he's only recently come to possibly favor civil unions and has not taken a strong stance either way.

My take over at <a href="http://probablyawkward.typepad.com/that_was_probably_awkward/2007/08/outside-our-pur.html" rel="nofollow">Probably Awkward.

Applause applause! Thanks for a succinct post addressing what's been giving me the willies about the Craig coverage. It's interesting to me that you say "wow" about the criminalization of desire. I think 'us queers' know all about this and the way the criminalization plays out every day. Cop-bathroom-desire stings are fairly regular features of our landscape.
